The Preparation

This Blog will describe the research that I will be undertaking alongside Earthwatch scientists in relation to The Koala. The Koala (known as Phascolarctos cinereus or more widely known as 'Blinky Bill') is an icon of Australia which has a great public appeal. Given the Koala's appeal to international visitors the Koala contributes significantly to Australia's tourism industry hence conserving the Koala and its habitat is a priority.

During my blogs I will be blogging about highlights of the day, what activities I completed together with any details that are uncovered which may be considered as new data for the project. I will also be posting pictures so that you can see what I have been up to.

This day has come around so quickly that whilst I am excited I am also apprehensive about the challenges that this expedition brings. I have packed, consulted my checklist and have decided to bring some comfort food with me to help me through the 10 days.

My expectations of this expedition are high given that this is the first expedition that has been completed by Earthwatch in Victoria so I am hoping that I will be able to contribute to their conservation in some way. As this is the first expedition with the Koala's in this area, you could say that this is a 'pioneering expedition' which will set the agenda for future Koala expeditions.

I will definitely miss my family (Barry, Mitchell, Alby - the cat and Baxter - the dog) as this is the longest time that I will have been separated from them. So I hope that phone reception is good as I would like to speak to them daily to hear their voices.

I am expecting to see lots of koala's and am looking forward to holding one and trekking through the beautiful country at Cape Otway. I will be staying in a Deluxe Cabin at Bimbi National Park which is great however, it will be very cold (I will miss my electric blanket) so I am hoping for some fine weather.
